FAQs
What should the log cabin go on?
All log cabins must be assembled on a firm and level base to ensure a solid foundation and longevity. Without it, the cabin may become misaligned, causing issues with doors and the roof. (The log cabin comes with a floor & joists, but not a firm and level base.)
Can I insulate the log cabin?
We don't offer insulation services but our 44mm thick timber log cabins provide natural insulation. If you want additional insulation, customers can add their own insulation, by adding insulating foam boards beneath roof boards or between floor bearers but this may affect your 10-year guarantee eligibility. Read the guarantee terms and contact POWERSHEDS before making any changes.
Can I install electrics in the log cabin?
We do know that some customers may choose to install electrics in log cabin. This is not something we can advise on, and due the risk of fire hazards we recommend seeking a professional to advise and assist in this process.
Installing electrics may affect your 10-year guarantee eligibility. Read the guarantee terms and contact POWERSHEDS before making any changes.
Has the timber been treated?
The log cabins come untreated, apart from the pressure-treated floor bearers so you will need to treat the rest of the log cabin. It's best to treat the cabin after assembly because treating prior to assembly may cause them not to fit correctly as it can cause the timber to expand. However, it is okay to treat the pressure-treated bearers, floor, and roof boards before installation (making it easier to maintain the building in the long run.)
After assembly, you will need treat the rest of the wooden components inside and outside of the log cabin using any high-quality, oil or solvent-based preserver to maintain the 10 Year Guarantee on the timber.
We recommend a well-known brand such as Protek and provide a free, 5L container of Protek Wood Preserver ++ with every log cabin to get you started! You may require more than this for your log cabin.How much preserver you will need will depend on the size of your cabin, the preserver used, the method of application and the number of coats applied. Always refer to the suppliers’ directions on usage when assessing how much preserver you will need.
How should I maintain the log cabin?
- Leave enough space around the cabin for treatment and maintenance.
- Treat your log cabin with a high-quality wood preserver after assembly. Apply thick coats, focusing on the bottom logs and joints. Re-treat the cabin annually.
- If you wish to treat your log cabin with a paint, you may want to use a clear preserver as well as the paint. Speak to the paint supplier / manufacturer for more details.
- Make sure there's no debris buildup on the roof and no branches touching the felt to prevent damage and water issues.
How long will it take for me install the log cabin?
The installation time depends on the number and experience of people helping and the size of the log cabin. With a team of two with limited-no experience, it may take around 6-8 hours. Various factors such as weather, ground/surface level, and experience can influence the timescale, but the interlocking log system aims to simplify the process.
Do the log cabins have guttering?
The cabins come with uPVC Gutter Drip Plate, which is a two-part accessory attached to the flat edge of the roof which creates an angle to direct the water off on your log cabin. (The Drip Plate supplier provides a video on how to fit them to your roof.) These work well with guttering, but we do not supply guttering.
How thick is the wood?
The log cabin is built with interlocking logs with double tongue and groove, available in 44mm thickness however if you are looking for a log cabin with 28mm thickness- please view our website:)
How can I keep my log cabin well ventilated?
It's important to ventilate your log cabin to prevent moisture and heat from causing problems with the timber. Without proper ventilation, condensation can lead to mold and mildew growth, which can affect the structure of the cabin.
Consider the intended use of your log cabin while you address ventilation. Any internal heat sources, such as electronics, fans, or people, can contribute to increased moisture levels inside the building. Here are a few ways to ventilate your log cabin:
1. Open doors and windows
2. Install vents*
3. Use electric fans or a whirligig for airflow*
